THESE heroic men volunteered their time as firefighters, helping to extinguish fires while bombs were falling around them.

Trevor Hughes sent in this photograph of the group of firemen, which is believed to have been captured on Baxter Street in 1939.

Two of the men, Frank Hughes, who is Trevor’s dad, and Bill Bailey were sent to Liverpool after completing their training.

A man called Jimmy Sheath is also pictured in the photograph.

Trevor said: “I think it’s sad that these men were risking their lives, fighting fires with bombs still falling around them.

“A number of them were killed and they were never awarded a medal for their courage.”
