A LYMM primary school’s Christmas play could be transferred from the school hall to millions of TV screens across the UK after being named as a finalist in Virgin TV’s Christmas Stars competition.

Oughtrington Community Primary School entered its original play into the competition and it has now been shortlisted.

This means the play could be professionally filmed and made available to four million people in the days leading up to Christmas.

In response to the competition entry question, ‘why should your Christmas play be made available to four million Virgin TV customers this Christmas?’, the school entered its woodland-inspired Christmas play called The Little Red Robins.

The play features Mr and Mrs Robin who decorate a Christmas tree in preparation for a festive party.

The birds soon call on their animal friends to help them get the tree ready but they are too busy so the robins have to do it themselves.

A wise owl reminds the rest of the animals about the true spirit of Christmas and they decide to contribute in different ways so they have the best party ever.

In their entry, the school said: “This year, our production is a rewritten and heart-warming Christmas themed version of a familiar and traditional story which viewers will appreciate. It focuses on friendship, kindness, teamwork and the true meaning of Christmas.

“Viewers will sing along to well-known nursery rhymes with a Christmas twist. The costumes and scenery will be eye catching, memorable and will delight audiences across the country.

“The very young cast will wow the nation with their fantastic storytelling skills and we are without a doubt that Virgin TV viewers will tune in and will not be disappointed.”

As part of the prize, the winners will work with popular TV entertainer, Stephen Mulhern, who will join the school’s cast playing the role of narrator for a one-off performance.

The winning school will receive £5,000, while a runner up will be awarded £1,000.

Twenty-two schools will also be awarded £100 for reaching the final stage of the competition.

David Bouchier, chief digital entertainment officer at Virgin Media, said: “A huge congratulations to Oughtrington Community Primary School for reaching the final stage of our magical Christmas Stars competition.

“Their production has the perfect ingredients for a feel-good festive play which could be enjoyed by millions of Virgin TV customers this Christmas.

“We’ve now got the tough task of choosing a winner from our fantastic finalists – good luck Oughtrington Community Primary School!”
