2014 World Cup versus Uruguay

England were appalling at the 2014 World Cup. The Three Lions went out with a whimper after gaining a mere one point from nine. Despite the team’s woes, the tournament held a significant moment for Rooney. The striker found the back of the net in England’s 2-1 loss to Uruguay. While it may seem like a throwaway moment, it was the only World Cup goal of his international career. It came after a nice attacking move from England down the right-hand side. Glen Johson’s pass across the six-yard box was met by Rooney to equalise the score at 1-1.

UEFA Euro 2004 versus Croatia

Rooney burst onto the international scene during the UEFA Euro 2004 tournament. In England’s second match against Switzerland, Rooney became the Euro tournament’s youngest ever scorer. He scored twice on the night. However, it was his play against Croatia in the Three Lions’ third match that will be long remembered. Needing to see off Croatia to progress, England came from behind with Rooney scoring twice. Rooney’s second goal saw the teenager play a one-two with Michael Owen at the halfway line. 2014 World Cup Qualifying versus Poland

Gazette:

In October 2013, England needed a win against Poland to qualify for the next year’s World Cup. A loss meant Ukraine would overtake the English. The match was cagey and tense, and early on, it looked like a goal may not come. On 41 minutes, however, Rooney rose to the occasion. Leighton Baines’ cross from the left side found Rooney at the edge of the six-yard box and the striker made no mistake powering the header into Poland’s goal. Rooney’s header was the match winner and the Three Lions were Brazil bound.

2013 Friendly versus Brazil

Gazette:

In June 2013, England travelled to South America to play Brazil. The two nations battled at the Maracana Stadium in preparation for the World Cup the next summer. After over an hour of poor play from England, Roy Hodgson’s team suddenly kicked into gear. Rooney set up Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain's goal to get England on the scoreboard. Just over 20 minutes later, it was Rooney’s turn to find the back of the net. After gaining possession at the halfway line, James Milner moved past Thiago Silva and laid the ball off to Rooney. The striker then dribbled through Brazil’s defence as he cut inside toward the ‘D’. In full stride, Rooney let loose a shot from around 25-yards that curved into Julio Cesar’s top left corner. The Three Lions came away with a 2-2 draw.
