WARRINGTON South MP Faisal Rashid has challenged Theresa May over her draft Brexit deal.

Mrs May faced criticism today, Thursday, after making a statement in the House of Commons following the resignation of two cabinet ministers.

Mr Rashid believes the deal is a 'real backwards step' from the UK's current position.

He added: "Councils up and down the country, like mine in Warrington, are urging MPs to ask for a People’s Vote so they have a say on whether to be worse off.

"Does the Prime Minister agree with me that it is in the national interest to now go back to the people of this country, and if the Parliament votes down this deal, will the Prime Minister give the British people a voice?"

Mr Rashid has vowed to do his best to make the right decisions for his constituents – with the information available to him.

He has also been urging residents to complete his Brexit survey but insists he fully respects the referendum result.

Warrington was one of the areas that voted to exit the EU in the referendum in 2016, with Leave winning 62,487 votes in the town, which amounted to 54.3 per cent.

Warrington Conservatives have responded after the Government was plunged into crisis following the resignation of Brexit secretary Dominic Raab and work and pensions secretary Esther McVey.

It came just hours after Mrs May announced she had secured the backing of her cabinet on her Brexit deal.

Paul Campbell, chairman of Warrington Conservatives, said: "Our members and supporters tell us they want an agreement that respects the outcome of the 2016 referendum, which protects jobs, puts controls on immigration and restores sovereign powers to the United Kingdom Parliament, something which was also in the 2017 Conservative manifesto.

"We are very concerned in that businesses should have certainty to operate and, while the necessary negotiations have taken some time, we need to resolve things quickly, so we can agree trade deals and get on with our life outside the EU.

"I remain of the opinion that no deal is better than a bad deal.

"We had a people's vote in 2016, we had a General Election in 2017.

"We don’t need further votes, the Government has to implement the democratic decision that's already been taken."

More than 1,400 residents have completed Mr Rashid's survey so far.

The survey asks residents why they voted to Leave or Remain, how they would vote if the referendum was held again today and who they would prefer to have the final say on the deal negotiated by the Government.
