A FASHION designer from Padgate has secured a prestigious internship working with the legendary Dame Vivienne Westwood.
Kirsty Owen, who is two years into a fashion design degree at Sheffield Hallam University, is currently helping with the iconic designer’s collection for next year in London after being accepted onto the top placement.
The 22-year-old former Padgate High School and Priestley College student’s daily tasks included completing drawings, creating fabrics and attending regular meetings with Dame Vivienne.
She said: “”It is inspiring to work with Vivienne - she has a big personality with lots of interesting anecdotes to tell, and pays attention to me even though I’m just an intern.
“I never expected to work with Vivienne, but I did meet her whilst on a tour of her studios in London.
“She came in to talk to her design team, but nobody was expecting to even see her.”
Kirsty is now hoping to apply for a job with Dame Vivienne’s label after she graduates.
The former Priestley textiles, art, maths and biology student added: “For anyone else who might be interested in a career in fashion, I would say the most important thing is educating yourself in fashion and the industry that surrounds it.
“Knowing what your personal ethos is as a designer can also be a good way to find yourself in the fashion world.”
Emma Lingard, who tutored Kirsty in fashion and textiles at Priestley College, was proud to hear of her old pupil’s success.
She said: “It really is inspiring for our current cohort to hear of a former student going on to do so well.
“We really hope Kirsty can come back to college one day and share some of the amazing experiences she must be having with our students.”
