KNITSFORD members have thanked the public and businesses for their support for the 3,000 knitted poppies created for displays in Knutsford for Remembrance.

The displays were created by more than 20 members of the group, supported by members of the public.

This is the fifth year the Knitsford group has created a display at the Canute Square roundabout, and the group wanted to create two additional displays this year to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the end of The First World War.

Group member Bernadette Grantham said: “We had more than 150 women and men knit or crochet poppies for the displays, and the Knitsford group would like to thank them too.

“We couldn't have done it without them, and we would also like to thank everyone who gave us knitting needles to use.

“I have been amazed by the lovely comments from people about the displays.

“They said it has made such a difference, and I have seen lots of people taking photographs of the displays.”

Displays were created at the new Centennial War Memorial in the Knutsford Library gardens, at the war memorial on Mobberley Road and on the Canute Square roundabout.

In addition almost 100 little wreaths were created and handed out to every address where a soldier was believed to have lived or the nearest address, with a little note explaining what they were.

Bernadette also thanked the businesses which sponsored the displays.

Omnia Klenz provided hundreds of cable ties to hold the knitted poppies to the knitting needles and MDRCreative printed 300 patterns for the group to distribute with the kits.

Walkers Carpets and Flooring donated wire to create the background for the war memorial on Mobberley Road (opposite St Cross), Crafty Corner in Macclesfield supplied wool at a reduced cost, Shorrock Trichem donated plastic bags to put the kits in and Living Ventures providing the board room for the group’s use.

Members of the public offered to help create the displays following an appeal in the Guardian.

The Knitsford group has about 50 knitters, who are mostly from Knutsford, and received a discretionary accolade at Knutsford’s annual Town Awards.
