A TIME capsule buried by pupils in the 90s has been unearthed by builders at Asda Westbrook, giving a glimpse into school life from years gone by.

The fascinating discovery was made during ongoing building work at the supermarket site as part of plans to redevelop the car park.

The capsule was buried in October 1996 by pupils from Penketh High School, along with a helping hand from Asda staff who also put their stamp on the keepsakes.

It included a school uniform, a selection of work by pupils, plastic carrier bags, a pencil case and pens and an Asda colleague card.

Cathy Robinson, who runs the Asda Community scheme, said: “It was dug up by the contractors working on the site development.

“They found it near the side wall just past the cash machines.

“Unfortunately the box disintegrated and some of the contents were badly damaged but we have cleaned most of the dirt off.”

Pupils and staff including John Carlin, principal at the school on Heath Road, visited the store earlier this month to take a look at the discovery and take a welcome trip down memory lane.

As some of the work had been destroyed, the school has since issued an appeal for any pupils involved to come forward so they can find out more about the origins of the historic collection which was buried more than two decades ago.

A new time capsule has now been buried at the supermarket site which includes a copy of the latest edition of the Warrington Guardian.

To ensure the capsule survives the test of time, the capsule has been buried in concrete to provide an extra layer of protection.
