PUPILS and staff at Great Sankey Primary School have taken part in a special Remembrance week.

It has seen children learning about the names of local heroes who lost their lives during the First World War.

Each class was assigned a solider from the area, many of whom attended the primary school.

They learned about their occupation before the war, where they lived and their family history. Classes visited St Mary’s Cemetery to pay their respects and also visited the graves of the soldiers they had been researching.

Pupils also visited the library to talk to historians and see first-hand how the research had been carried out.

Head teacher, Vicky Briggs, said: "It has been an excellent week in which the children have not only learned about the Great War but also about soldiers from Penketh and Great Sankey, so that they have become more than just a name.

"This event has captured the whole school and community in remembering those that went to war.

"Visitors came to the school who have also shared lots of information and we thank them for their support in helping to provide lots of information, as well as an ex-commando soldier who came in to talk to the children about his experiences.

"The school has created a lasting tribute with every child and member of staff painting a pebble for our poppy which is outside school.

"In addition to this every child also made a poppy to add to our very own ‘Weeping Window,’ based on the Imperial War Museum’s cascade."
