MP Helen Jones has criticised a Remembrance Day ‘VIP reception’ – but refused to confirm whether she will be claiming travel expenses for the event.

Hundreds of residents gathered at the war memorial on Bridge Foot for a two-minute silence and remembrance service yesterday, falling on the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War.

Mayor of Warrington Cllr Karen Mundry, Lord Hoyle, Warrington North MP Mrs Jones and Warrington South MP Faisal Rashid were among those who laid wreaths at the town’s war memorial.

As reported last year, data published by the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority showed Mrs Jones' claimed around £35 in expenses linked to five Remembrance Day services between 2011 and 2015.

The claims covered the journeys made by the MP.

However, the politician has refused to confirm whether she will be claiming any expenses for yesterday’s event.

But her office has criticised the ‘VIP reception’.

Last week, a spokesman from Mrs Jones’ office said: “As she has done since 1997, Helen will be attending the Remembrance Sunday parade and service.

“She had relatives who fought in both world wars and many others who have served in the forces since.

“She will travel with others from the Town Hall but will not be attending the ‘VIP reception’, which she believes should not be paid for out of public funds.”

The council has responded to the statement.

A spokeswoman said: “The reception comprises of tea/coffee and biscuits for the platform party at the service.

“The total cost of this is approximately £15 and will be paid for by the council.”

Mr Rashid also highlighted the importance of yesterday’s event.

Last week, he said: “I will be attending this Sunday’s remembrance service on Bridge Foot, where I will be paying tribute to the men and women who have given their lives fighting for our country – this year I will also be joining the town in marking the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War.

"This will be my second year attending the event as a Member of Parliament.

"I did not claim travel costs to or from the event last year and I will not be claiming travel costs to travel to or from the event this year."
