PLANS for a new hydroelectric power scheme on the Mersey at Woolston Weir have been given the green light by Warrington Borough Council.
Three Archimedes screw turbines would be constructed in the river dam, located north of Woolston Eyes, under the proposals.

The scheme could generate enough power for nearly 500 homes, saving 730 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions per year.
H20 Power Generation has now been granted planning permission for the scheme.
Proposals include the construction of generator and substation buildings.
Peel Group was given planning permission for a similar scheme in 2014, but this expired in 2016.
