A DETERMINED woman struggling with body dysmorphic disorder has vowed to put her fears to one side to help a three-year-old battling leukaemia.

Jen Littlejohn, from Stockton Heath, is in the middle of a series of physical challenges to raise money for Rhys, her best friend's son, who was recently diagnosed with acute lymphocyte leukaemia.

The 35-year-old, who opened up about her battle with mental health issues to mark World Suicide Prevention Day in September, said: "Rhys loves superheroes and he is the biggest superhero out there.

"His main super power is smiling.

"He is always smiling through the gruelling treatments, tiredness, pain and constant journeys to and from hospital."

Jen hopes to be able to send Rhys and her family on a dream holiday to meet some of his favourite superheroes in Universal Studios Orlando.

As well as running 120 miles a month – which is equivalent to the distance that Rhys has to travel a month for treatment – she also completed 11 hours of fitness classes on Saturday including body bump, circuits and spinning.

"This was by far the hardest thing I have done as I still suffer with body dysmorphic disorder," said Jen.

"Because of this I struggle being near mirrors and people with perfect bodies.

"It was a huge inner fight for me but I put Rhys to the front of mind."

Jen has also climbed Mount Snowdon in her Alder Hey Children's Hospital pyjamas as well as the Tatton 10k.

She added: "The strength from not only Rhys but Dave and Andrea is incredible.

"The understanding, patience and love from their eight-year-old daughter is amazing .

"This family have always given unconditional love and support and will help anyone in need.

"I hope we can all do the same."
