TWO Warrington real ale pubs are marking milestones for the consistent quality of their beer.

The 2019 Good Beer Guide marks The Tavern’s 20th continuous entry in the annual book, compiled by the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) and the Lower Angel's 10th consecutive year.

North Cheshire CAMRA’s area takes in more than 200 cask ale pubs and clubs but space restrictions mean less than one in 10 actually get in the guide.

One year is no mean feat but 10 years on the run for the Lower Angel in Buttermarket Street – decorated with memorabilia from Warrington’s long-lost Walker’s Brewery and run by licensee Andy Sutton – has been described as 'outstanding' by CAMRA.

The Tavern in Church Street, celebrating two decades in the guide, is run by the Wilkinson family and is also the tap room for John Wilkinson's 4Ts brewery in Latchford. His son Matt Wilkinson is now in charge at The Tavern while John runs 4Ts with head brewer Jordan Millington. The Tavern features eight cask ales and three craft beer lines which change throughout the week.

Matt, a former Bridgewater High student, said: "The Tavern is a big part of our family life and we give everyone a warm welcome there.

"It's great to be recognised as a quality real ale pub. It's a really good achievement and I think it's a credit to my dad and my uncles who have not let the quality slip all that time. The highlight for me is always meeting different people and hearing stories about how the pub used to be."

Jim Reddihough, Chairman of North Cheshire CAMRA, added: “It's good to see the two of the towns key real ale pubs recognised in this way. In an industry that is subject to constant change and the reduction in numbers of pubs in the town it is a pleasure to celebrate the success of long term commitment at these two venues and see the way that serving high quality real ale has enabled them to prosper.”
