WARRINGTON is one of the top performing areas in the country for recycling, a study has found.

The nation’s recycling ‘notspots’ have been revealed with a postcode lottery of different schemes leading to more than 80 per cent of waste not being sent for recycling in some areas.

The research, conducted by smartphone recyclist Envirofone, reveals that 3.7 million people admit they don’t make an effort to regularly recycle, with those aged 18-24 the biggest culprits.

However, Warrington ranked the eighth best performing area in the country with 54 per cent of household waste sent for recycling.

Westminster City local authority are the worst recyclers in the UK, with 83 per cent of their overall waste not being sent for recycling.

Chester and Cheshire East also rank within the top 10 areas for best recycling efforts.

Rising levels of consumerism, an increase in non-biodegradable packaging and an ever-growing population have all contributed to larger amounts of waste being created, according to Envirofone.

Denise Timmis, head of online at Envirofone, said: “It really is shocking to see how little of our waste is recycled. As a company that is passionate about recycling, we think it’s really important to make as much use out of our materials as possible.

"We don’t need to give up on things so soon and we don’t always need to buy new - even damaged phones can be recycled!

“We hope our research helps to spread awareness of how much of our waste is currently not being recycled and encourages people to take extra measures to ensure we’re able to increase the amount of recycled waste here in the UK.”
