AS a pedestrian, who lives close to Orford Jubilee Hub and uses it regularly, I would like to respond to a letter in last week’s Warrington Guardian (September 13).

The reason that parking wardens and fines were introduced was in response to a minority of inconsiderate drivers, who parked (illegally) on the pavements and walkways close to the hub, making it impossible at times for pedestrians to use them without stepping into the road.

I am comparatively fit and healthy, so it’s not a major problem for me, but I have often seen elderly people and mums with pushchairs struggling to get past safely, which cannot be right.

From observation, the problem seems to be worst between 10am and 11am on Saturdays, when (presumably) parents are taking their children to swimming lessons.

On one occasion recently, I went inside to complain about the cars parked illegally, only to be told that the warden might not be working at that time. (Note to the hub management: perhaps his hours need to be changed/varied?) Regarding the lack of advertising, as a frequenter of the hub, I know that there are plenty of signs both outside and inside the building, including at least one prominently displayed at reception (and another close to the automatic log-in machines), advising users that if they expect to be there for more than three hours, they should inform reception.

If you’re not sure whether you will stay so long surely the common sense thing to do is to speak to them, just in case?

I agree that fitness is important for all ages. But I hope the man will agree that the safety of all road users, including pedestrians, is also important.
