I UNDERSTAND that there have been three serious personal injury accidents at the junction of Wilson Patten Street and Bold Street within the past few days.

Can I please point out a major problem which concerns me when driving to work in the morning.

Traffic queuing at the lights at Bridge Foot frequently extends back past this junction and indeed not infrequently even past Bank Quay Station.

When this traffic is stationary and the next vehicle on the east side of the pedestrian crossing located some 20 or 25 feet from the junction is a large lorry occupying the space immediately on the eastward side of the pedestrian crossing, it is quite impossible for pedestrians crossing at that point or indeed a car driver travelling towards Bank Quay to see each other.

Being wary of this junction, I always slow down when traffic conditions are thus, but I think many drivers proceeding towards Bank Quay Station quite simply continue at the normal traffic speed of 30mph.

This is not a location where, except possibly in very light traffic conditions, there is any speeding: it is quite simply a point where there is a lack of visibility.

I did suggest when works were being carried out at this point a few years ago that pedestrian traffic lights would make far more sense since it would be clear to both motorists and hopefully pedestrians that traffic needs to stop thereby allowing safe passage for pedestrians.

My office is located only 30 yards from the junction and in course of going to and fro I see the problem quite clearly.

I know that there are proposals to divert through traffic off Wilson Patten Street, but these proposals have been around for a considerable time and so far as I am aware there is no funding or date for their commencement.

A set of pedestrian traffic lights would cost a lot less than constructing a complete new road.
