A SHORT bypass to ease congestion misery in Lower Stretton has been ruled out.

Warrington Borough Council has examined options to alleviate traffic woes in the area following concerns from Warrington South MP Faisal Rashid, Stretton Parish Council, councillors and residents.

The highway – which had been estimated at costing more than £7.5 million to build – would have connected Northwich Road with Tarporley Road to the south of junction 10 of the M56.

But transport chiefs have confirmed it will not be built.

A council spokesman said: "The council has now completed its assessment work of a potential bypass.

"This assessment work has shown that the business case for a bypass is very weak and, as a result, this will not be pursued further by the council.

"A range of alternative measures are currently being investigated for introduction on the A559 Northwich Road through Lower Stretton to address concerns raised, including either by the widening of the carriageway with reprofiling of the existing build-outs, or the widening of the carriageway with removal of the build-outs.

"With both of these options, the provision of average speed cameras to better manage traffic speeds will be fully investigated.

"The council has now informed MP Faisal Rashid, ward councillors and Stretton Parish Council of this outcome."
