A YOUNG Warrington angler is getting ready to take his big chance in front of the Sky Sports cameras this weekend.

Orford’s Kieran Charnock, 17, has qualified for the junior final at the annual Fish'O'Mania event and is in with a chance of taking home a £1,000 jackpot prize.

Saturday’s final at Hayfield Lakes near Doncaster will be shown live on Sky Sports and father Lea says his son, who fishes for the Carlsberg Tetley team, will be fulfilling a dream by competing at this year’s Grand Final.

“It’s a very big day for him,” he said.

“He is excited as this has been a dream for him, to get to Fish'O'Mania.

“He knows it’s not all going to be about his junior final, but he will be on there.

“It is that chance to try and win that title, which is massive.”

Charnock qualified for the event by winning the Angling Trust Youth National Championships at Aston Park in Sheffield.

Five of the anglers he beat to win that title will also contest the Fish'O'Mania final and his father believes that proves he can win the top prize on Saturday.

He also says the prize money would make “all the difference” to Kieran’s future angling career and that he wants to inspire other juniors in Warrington to get involved in the sport.

“He’s got a one in six chance, as they say,” he said.

“There’s only six juniors in it, and the other five are those who qualified from the match at Sheffield.

“He’s already beaten them all once, so he’s proven he’s good enough to win it.

“He wants to save up for a new pole, so that £1,000 would make all the difference for that.

“He got accepted onto an apprenticeship on Tuesday as well, so he’s very happy about that.

“With that and his Angling Trust win, we’re hoping there’s more good news to come.”

“Junior fishing is nowhere near as big as what it used to be when I was a junior.

“Hopefully what Kieran is doing in Warrington and the success he’s had will encourage more juniors to get involved.”

You can watch Kieran in action live when coverage of Fish'O'Mania gets underway at 12pm on Sky Sports Action.
