A POLICE watchdog has established a timeline of events regarding information given to Cheshire Constabulary prior to the death of Angela Craddock.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IPOC) launched an investigation in April after William Smart, 54, of Winmarleigh Street in the town centre, was arrested on suspicion of the 40-year-old's murder.

The 54-year-old remains in custody ahead of the next hearing at Liverpool Crown Court on June 15.

A provisional trial date has been set by Judge Clement Goldstone QC for October 9, which is estimated to last five days.

The investigation by the police watchdog is looking at the response by Cheshire Constabulary to information they received about Smart between April 3 and 10.

IOPC regional director Amanda Rowe said: “Our thoughts and sympathies are with the family and friends of Angela Craddock.

"Our investigation is under way and is progressing well.

"Though our work is in the early stages, we have already established a timeline of events regarding information given to Cheshire Constabulary prior to Ms Craddock’s death, and will now work towards clarifying what they knew about William Smart and what action was taken.”

The IOPC, formerly the Independent Police Complaints Commission, oversee the national police complaints system and investigate the most serious incidents and complaints involving the police.

The case was referred to the IOPC by Cheshire Police.

A murder investigation was launched following Ms Craddock's death on April 10.

The 40-year-old died in hospital after she suffered head injuries inside a flat on St Elphin’s Close in Howley.
