THE Commonwealth flag was raised at the Town Hall on Monday to mark the 100th anniversary of the First World War and Commonwealth Day.

Cllr Graham Friend, the council’s armed forces champion, was joined by Cllr Diana Bennett, Cllr Jean Flaherty and Reverend Canon Paul D Wilson, Rector of Warrington, to light the fourth of four candles symbolising the four years of the First World War.

The ceremony has been repeated annually for the past four years.

Cllr Friend said: “The Commonwealth values of tolerance, respect and understanding as well as equity and fairness set out in the Commonwealth Charter are also the values that I speak about as armed forces champion.

“This small but symbolic and important event will give us time to reflect on what has gone before but also of conflicts today and how vital it is to continue to strive for our own communities and for our worldwide community also.”
