A YOUNG teacher who has amazed parents with his fresh approach to exam pressures and building confidence is our Teacher of the Month for March.

When Stuart Mycroft, 32, was surprised with the award in front of his class one of his pupils gasped and said: “I thought he was in trouble!”

“I’m completely surprised and I’m lost for words – which is unusual for me!” said Mr Mycroft.

The Year 6 teacher, from Kirby, has been working at Birchwood C of E Primary School for two years but he started his career as a teaching assistant, which he said was ‘the best route’.

“I have always worked in schools and I really enjoy my job,” he said.

He was nominated by Zoe Hatton, who said her daughter had dreaded coming to school before she moved to Birchwood but had flourished when she joined Mr Mycroft’s class.

Mrs Hatton said: “Mr Mycroft is a truly inspiring teacher and he is the kind of teacher who gives 100 per cent constantly!

“He has gone above and beyond to make sure the children are not feeling the pressure by organising lots of hands on and valued trips to make the children feel valued.”

Mr Mycroft said he enjoys organising fun events and school trips for his pupils.

The class laughed and joked as they showed off pictures from a recent ‘tough mudder’ event he had organised to raise money for Sport Relief.

“I have always said I didn’t want my pupils to be stressed about their tests,” he said.

“School is primarily about positive experiences and those things that you will always remember.

“I love the school and I love the kids – we are very proud of them. They are a lovely bunch.

“It’s a fab school to work at and the staff are very dedicated. The children are so appreciative even when you are making them crawl through mud for sport relief!”

The award, which is sponsored by education recruitment and training consultancy Academics Ltd, honours a teacher who has made a real difference to the school community.
