Even though the heavens opened just before the racing commenced on Sunday, spirits were not dampened and revellers were treated to an exciting performance from some of the sport's big names including six times world champion and Isle of Man TT winner Jim Redman and Top Gear presenter James May.

Event organiser Frank Melling estimated that around 100,000 people turned out for the event, travelling from as far afield as Norway and the Shetland Islands.

Frank said: "I'm more proud of yesterday's event than any other with the weather being how it was and the riders deserve credit for going out and racing in near monsoon conditions."

The event kicked off with a cavalcade through town, followed by some exciting racing action on Barons Quay car park, which was slower than normal due to the treacherous conditions.

James May, who gave a stellar performance on his 87 Honda, said: "I was relieved when it was over, the bike is very powerful and with the bad weather I could have had a very terrible mishap."

Despite many shops closing early, business was bustling for the town's eateries and Charlie's on Witton Street was prepared for a busy day after ordering a staggering 40lb of sausages.

Manager Penny Storey, said: "The Thundersprint is fantastic for business and it's nice to see the familiar faces that come back every year."
