AN ADHD services volunteer has called for more support for the condition after picking up a national award.

Jean Fitzpatrick received the volunteer award for Outstanding Contribution at the ADHD Foundation Awards having helped to set up a parent and carer support group, but says this is only an 'important first step'.

Ms Fitzpatrick said: “There is a huge gap in services for families living with ADHD – much more support is need in terms of understanding the condition and how it affects our young people as well as how we can best support them and their families both educationally, emotionally and socially.

“We hope setting up this support group will be a very important first step in achieving our aims.”

Jean became involved with the foundation after they offered a training programme to families living with ADHD in Warrington, which she claimed was 'invaluable' as she helped form the support group shortly after.

Meanwhile, the council’s early help division won a partnership award in recognition of the work they have carried out to support children, young people and families where there is a diagnosis of ADHD.

Alongside the foundation, they have supported more than 100 families in Warrington, having commissioned three skill-building programmes and worked with specialist nurses to set up the support group.

Cllr Jean Carter, executive board member for children’s services, said: “Congratulations to everyone involved in this service and to Jean as you continue to help drive this agenda forward and support the work that is being carried out to support families where there is a diagnosis or pending diagnosis of ADHD.”

The support group meets on the last Wednesday of each month from 6.30 to 8.30pm at the Sensory Centre in Woolston.
