BARRY Wike will be out with thousands of women painting the town pink on Friday, June 21.

That is because he will be on hand to the many walkers who will be pounding the streets of the town to raise money for St Rocco’s Hospice at its annual Starlight Walk.

Volunteering to marshal the event for the sixth year running, Barry, aged 42, of Chestnut Avenue, Great Sankey, said: “I did it on my own to begin with, supporting my partner, Anita, who has walked it.

"Then the following year, and since then, my friend, Andy, joined me to encourage all the ladies walking the event, making them stay cheerful and give them boosters such as Haribo sweets each time they walk past us.”

Barry has been a key supporter of St Rocco’s thanks to the help they gave his dad Ron at the hospice before he died. Helping the hospice runs in the family too with his mum Edna previously volunteering in the St Rocco’s Charity Shop in Birchwood.

With 210 recruited so far, the hospice is looking for more volunteers to help marshal the event.

With its jolly atmosphere, Barry recommends marshalling the Starlight walk.

He said: “It’s inspiring to see people walk for a good cause. You’d be amazed to see how many people you actually know that are walking too.”

The sponsored walk sets off at midnight from Orford Jubilee Park and makes its way through Latchford, Padgate and the town centre.
