WARRINGTON Borough Council refused plans for a new motorway service station at junction 11 of the M62 for Birchwood last week.

I can’t work out why anyone would want to build one there in the first place.

Burtonwood services is a matter of minutes down the carriageway.

And seeing as that is regularly featured on lists of the worst rest stops in the country, why not spend your money doing this station up instead?

With a little bit of care and attention, there’s no reason why we couldn’t create something akin to the much-heralded Tebay services up in the Lake District.

All you would need is a quality craft bakery and some homemade produce from local businesses.

It would be great to be able to give motorists something a little more exciting than the bog standard Costa and WH Smiths.
