OUR president, Mrs Hazel Harkins, welcomed all members and visitors at the Moore and Daresbury WI meeting at the Milner Institute, Moore, on September 3.
We were reminded that the Hatton show would take place on September 12 at which our WI takes part, totally occupying a large marquee on the site, and members were asked to contribute as much as possible.
We were also reminded that we would be holding an afternoon tea event at the Milner Institute on October 28, with bring and buy stalls for scarves, jewellery and handbags and all members and visitors would be welcome. There will also be lucky dip gift bags available.
Our president then introduced our speaker, Mr Stephen Smart of Greenhalgh’s Bakery who gave us a very interesting talk on the development of his grandfather's company from 1957 to 2015.
From a small shop in Bolton they now own 61 shops and 55 vans in an area from Kendal in the North to Marple in the South, supplying 400 different products to their own shops, various supermarkets and airlines.
The wheat they use is all grown in Canada and it was interesting to learn about its journey to the UK.
Their motto is ‘Looking to the Future with a Strong Sense of the Past.’ After the talk members were offered a selection of their breads and cakes.
The next meeting of our WI will be held on October 1, when the speaker will be Edwina Greenwood, who will tell us about Trading Standards and rogue traders.
New members and visitors will be welcome.
