IF you fancy a nostalgic trip down memory lane to the days when big hair was the norm and rock and roll was in excess then look no further.

Rock of Ages is an evening of outrageous and hilarious rock and roll debauchery accompanied by an unforgettable soundtrack that will be ringing in your ears on the way home.

The opening night at the Liverpool Empire might have been running 10 minutes behind schedule but it was definitely worth the wait.

The smash hit musical is back in the UK this year with more than 25 classic rock anthems packed into this hilarious all-singing, all-dancing comedy. Hits including Don’t Stop Believin’, We Built This City, The Final Countdown, Wanted Dead or Alive and I Want To Know What Love Is are played loud and proud during the performance which will inevitably have you dancing in your seats before raising you on to your feet by the end of the show.

Rock of Ages transports its audience back to the mid 80s on the legendary Sunset Strip in LA – a time when rock and roll was a way of life and dreams were as big as the hair.

This LA love story follows the journey of aspiring rocker Drew, played by Luke Walsh, who dreams of breaking into the notoriously-difficult music industry and Kansas gal Sherrie, played by Danielle Hope, who heads for the lights of LA to become an actress. Naturally, their hearts are broken along the way as their lives travel down different paths.

But while their futures remain uncertain, what is clear is that this talented duo can effortlessly sing, dance and act and left the audience willing them to reunite in time for the curtain call.

With multiple storylines transfixing the audience, it is the job of barman-turned-narrator Lonny, played by Lucas Rush, to ensure the show runs smoothly – he is the glue holding this rock masterpiece together and he is perfect for this role. The entire cast cannot be faulted – the show is ridiculously fun, full of energy and brilliantly performed from start to finish. Zoe Birkett’s voice was simply breath-taking as Justice while Coronation Street’s Kevin Kennedy, most famous for his role as Curly Watts, seamlessly swapped the cobbles for centre stage as Dennis.

I wouldn’t consider myself a rock fan so my love of the show was a welcome surprise.

Quite simply, it totally rocked.

Rock of Ages will run until Saturday at the Liverpool Empire.
