MOST teenagers want to be rock stars.

But comedian Sam Avery almost did just that with his grunge-inspired band dBh (Dirty Blue Hook).

The Liverpool comic shared his anecdotes about being a small fish in the big music industry pond at his Edinburgh preview show Rock and Dole at The Lounge in Springfield Street.

From being an ‘angry but polite’ 14-year-old to his festival highlight and feud with Placebo, Avery had the Warrington audience captivated.

But some of his gags fell flat with him admitting some of the show ‘needed work’ before the flagship Edinburgh date.

Credit must also go to the strong line-up of support acts, particularly Sam Freeman whose bizarre observations, inspired by the venue’s haphazard lighting, were hilarious.

His rants about how sex education classes did not prepare him for the world of dating also raised plenty of smiles.

Richie Cain ploughed into fertile comedy territory with his routine about his fear of commitment and Binty Blair had the audience pleasantly perplexed discussing the finer differences between slugs and snails.

Bilal Zafar, on the other hand, charmed the crowd but could not quite get over his nerves.

He said he became a stand-up comic to boost his confidence as it is cheaper than therapy!

But special mention has to go to compere Neil Shawcross who organised the whole thing and was calm, composed and comical throughout.
