JAKE Gyllenhaal and Michael Peña play two cops who think they are invincible in David Ayer’s End of Watch.

The pair wear their badges like a shield as they bust gangs in South Central Los Angeles.

But they get in over their heads when they stir a drug and human-trafficking hornets’ nest and the Mexican cartel calls for their deaths.

Ayer uses a documentary-style format for his film but does not seem to stick with it which gets frustrating.

The chemistry between the two lead actors is superb but the director’s portrayal of the gritty streets is much weaker.

The battle between police and gangs in LA - and the parallels between them - has already been well documented in the likes of TV’s The Shield, Rampart and even Ayer’s own 2005 film Harsh Times.

End of Watch does not add anything new to the formula but is entertaining throughout.
