HERTSMERE MP James Clappison has sent out a message of support for the pound.

In a letter to his constituency chairman Mr David Wernick, the Conservative politician pledged his support for sterling and promised to campaign against the euro "as and when" a referendum on a single currency is called.

He said: "It is widely believed that the introduction of the euro has led to higher prices in other EU member states.

"Perhaps even more seriously, the introduction of the single currency would diminish our ability to set interest rates on the basis of what is best for the UK, with serious consequences for jobs, living standards and all other aspects of economic welfare."

He added: "All of this leads me to the conclusion that the single currency would leave my constituents worse off.

"I will, therefore, look for opportunities to campaign against the euro in Hertsmere with like-minded people of whatever political persuasion."

Mr Wernick welcomed the news. He said: "I fully support Mr Clappison and will do all I can to assist him."
