Matches only for those who can afford fees

I WOULD like to make a public apology through the Guardian to Warrington Anglers Association committee members.

I did not mean to offend when I attempted to stop an increase in the fee paid by competitors in the Sunday series matches that take place on the River Mersey.

Last season the entrance fee was reduced from £10 to £6 in the current climate in order to encourage as many members as possible to enjoy match fishing on the river.

I was sadly mistaken this season when I argued for it to remain the same for the similar ethical ideals that were given in the secretary’s letter to members in this year’s licence.

He mentioned the current recession difficulties experienced by members and the committee’s awareness of this problem.

I should have realised that this criteria goes out of the window where association match fees apply and that you enter these matches not for the crack, banter and enjoyment of fishing, but for money.

I again apologise for my obviously out of date ideals.

I thought that association matches are better run to maintain equal opportunities whether you be a prince or pauper, be it in skill, tackle or money.
