No logic to speed limits

No logic to speed limits No logic to speed limits

THE logic employed by Warrington Borough Council to justify blanket 20mph speed limits is interesting. Using its logic, if 20mph is better than 30 surely a 10mph limit would be better and a 5mph limit better still?

Come to think of it we could employ a bit of lateral thinking and require all motorists are preceded by a person waving a red flag.

Not only would this result in very safe roads but also cure the unemployment problem in Warrington.

if you got to a report dated 16th feb i covered all that, infact I have had a meeting with the council, who were adamant they were doing it for the right reasons, and now they are putting announcements on WIRE FM saying they are "taking the streets back" and also now ignoring me when I pointed out to them that these announcements were not only irresponsible but also anti road safety and dangerous, I have also been trying to get direct contact with the warrington guardian, but it seems they they are not exactly impartial either. equal power AND equal responsibility is the only way to ensure road safety.

Blanket 20mph limits have been tried in other places (I believe IIRC Portsmouth) and I think the studies actually showed an increase in road accidents. Lets face it though, the idiots who tear down streets like the one I live in, to avoid getting caught in traffic will pay as much attention to the 20mph limit as the 30mph limit currently in force.....ie...ZILCH

What I dont understand is that cars now have a better braking system (if Needed) than those of years gone by, so is this for safety of drivers on the road or due to pedestrians?? If for pedestrians then surely they need educating on Road safety! its simple if there is a car coming wait until it has passed, dont let your children play on the road, and use zebra crossings and pelican crossings where available, its not rocket science! I cant be the only one who thinks like this can i?

Anybody can read the results of the council's own pilot schemes online which tally with what Mike is claiming for Portsmouth and what has happened in other schemes. In summary they showed that the new limits had no effect on casualties, created rat runs in neighbouring roads, weren't enforced by police who simply don't have the resources to cover them, and actually didn't significantly reduce average speeds. According to the DFT, 20mph speed limits also increase pollution.

So there is no case for this. It's money wasted but the worst thing the council could now do is waste more money reversing it. The whole thing is a farce.

I have already had a meeting with the council over the speed reductions and they are adamant its for the right reasons but clearly now it isn't, you have to remember that it is the cycle groups that have really pushed for this, the same cycle groups who say they don't want helmets to be compulsory because it might put people off cycling... exactly what type will it put off? those who don't care about their own safety perhaps, if so, why would they consider anyone else's safety on the road, oh hang on they don't have to, the council are making sure it's all the motorists responsibility. for everyone reading this who are getting sick of the council making our roads MORE dangerous... tell them, send your emails, make your phonecalls. the more they hear the harder it is to ignore
