Cats aren’t pests – they are free spirits

IN reply to Nancy Ridings letter in the Guardian, April 26.

I am glad she doesn’t dislike animals.

Like her I to have had many pets, some of them cats and some of them very clever. I would never look on any of them as pests because they have been such good company and friends since I’ve lived on my own.

My cats use a litter tray which I clean and I don’t mind because I love them and it would be lonely without them.

After suffering with a bad back and having major surgery, I now have metal clips in my spine.

Any kind of dirt is a problem.

But what can we do about cats – they are free spirits and go where they want and there is nothing we can do about that.

I can still tell you about things to put in your garden that you might not know about Nancy.

Basically Mrs E Allender your just saying “I own a cat, im happy for it to cr@p anywhere"

If you cannot fully care for an animal, even due to ill health then don’t get a pet, simple as! Your just as guilty as any other pet owner who allows their pests to wonder where they like and leave dirt everywhere!

And again, why should others have to spend money buying all sorts of things to keep your cats out? especially when my foot is much cheaper!!! Yet again someone else choices become everyone else problems!!

Basically you did not read the letter properly did you, cat hating munky!? So intent are you on attacking cat lovers!
Mrs Allender did state quite clearly that her cats use a litter tray - it's there in black and white. Omg I wish I lived next door to you. I would own at least 6 cats and let them roam just to annoy you!

Basically Cleo…..neither did you!! What do you think “After suffering with a bad back and having major surgery, I now have metal clips in my spine. Any kind of dirt is a problem.” means then eh?!!?
The letter writer then goes on to state “they are free spirits and go where they want and there is nothing we can do about that” clearly indicating that her cats are left to roam, so you think they only cr@p in the litter tray?!?!? Usually blinkered view their cleo!
Ohh and by the way, I would soooooo love for you to live next to me! “I would own at least 6 cats and let them roam just to annoy you!”…..i would own 6 dogs and leave them out all day just to annoy you!!! I also have a love for heavy metal music :D
Enjoy the sunshine!!!

Yes well she was talking in general and not saying that her cats were resposible for crapping anywhere. read it properly man!
The bit about her surgery and the bit about any kind of dirt being a problem are two separate paragraphs but you chose to link them together as one to suit your own argument.
Cats are cats and always will be, even when you are under the soil so get over yourself man!

Sprinkle any areas of spare earth with either ground black pepper, crushed chillies.
Cats aren't a fan of either.

Lion dung works but as they say cats are a pest, Everyone except the cat owner has the expense of keeping them out of the gardens, Cat owners have no consideration for anyone but themselves.

God get a grip!!! is your precious garden more important than a cats life? People like you lot scare me the thought that anyone would hurt an animal is beyond me, just cos a bit of poo in a garden

grey_man says...

I don't think anybody is saying that though are they? Cat poo is dangerous though. It's the major cause of toxoplasmosis and I think the whole situation would calm down a bit if more cat owners were responsible as I understand Cleopatra is and seemingly the lady who wrote the original letter.

I have a dog and I don't expect somebody to clear up after it so I do it myself. I don't understand why some cat owners can't accept that clearing up after their animal isn't somebody else's job.

I know these issues often degenerate rapidly. But there's obviously a big difference between a pet and a wild animal.

It strikes me that there is a balance to this which is that more cat owners take responsibility for what their pets do. We've had good cat owners on here explaining how they train their cats.

So when somone else's verminous, bird killing "pet" uses our gardens to leave their disease carrying faeces we are supposed to say,"It's cool man they're like free spirits man" ?

Wonder if the writer feels the same about such human "free spirits" as mouthy drunks shouting obscenities or kids "expressing themselves" by spraying anatomical and scatological words , and illustrations, on walls and fences.

In an urban environment it would most probably be a pidgeon and therefore you would be able to shoot it.

Cheers for this post Chunky...it had me crying laughing lol!
I totally agree with you though.
I had a similar problem with a neighbour who kept bringing her dog to crap all over the grassed area to the rear of my garden+never bothered cleaning it up ;o/
Funnily enough, she hasn't been back since I warned her that next time I caught her,I would take a huge dose of laxative before visiting her doorstep ;o)
Evidently it's only ok when the 'bit of poo' is not in their own garden.......

when dealing with the likes of you lot then i dont see the point in wasting my humour twice (its never really appreciated) so why not recycle!

If your so concerned about bird cr@p get a car port! or a garage!! after all if were constantly told to buy expensive rubbish to stop the cats cr@pping in our garden im sure you can take your own advise and take appropriate measures!!!

(ps i think last time i used the term "drop trowel"!!!)

Bird droppings are unavoidable.. Cat crap is if cat owners dealt with the matter properly. I dont think shooting either is the answer. Cat owners are lazy and inconsiderate.... Not in my back yard comes to mind.

The vast majority of health adults have had and are immune to toxoplasmosis - which is only really a problem for the immunosuppressed or the pregnant. And for the pregnant the mother must be infected for the first time during pregnancy - ie not be immune already, ie unlikely. Its nowhere near the risk people make it out to be.
So, that's that straight - now then, where do I sign up to dispatch swift and terrible justice to bad pet owners, litterers, loud mouths et al?

grey_man says...
5:23pm Tue 29 May 12

Nice try, but the main source of toxoplasmosis in the UK is still cat ****. Apart from that, it's just not very nice clearing up after other people's pets. You might disagree, which is great, because I hate picking up my dog's poo so I'll let you know when we're out and about and you can do it for me.

Cleopatra says...
9:08am Wed 30 May 12

Ok, you cat haters who are concerned about getting toxoplasmosis from other peoples cats, do you know that although cats are the main hosts for the bacteria they are not the only source?
Handling raw meat and unwashed produce can also be a source of infection. So what are you going to do about that? Stop eating meat and fruit and vegetables? What about that, eh?
You could be putting yourselves at risk just by eating, never mind the cats!

grey_man says...
9:46am Wed 30 May 12

At least that would be the people's choice. They're your cats. You deal with their ****.

chunkymunky says...
10:54am Wed 30 May 12

Ha ha ha cleo, great attempt, however surly most people would just use their common sense and wash their hands perhaps? why such measures as 'become a veggie'?!?!?

Your argument (especially using that as clout) is at thin as a Warrington market nightie!!

Don’t you think there’s a bit of a difference from bacteria gained from handling food to that of cat cr@p?!? Maybe choice and preference come into it, like "ohh i choose to have this nice steak....and when ive mauled it I’ll wash my hands because im not a pillock", to having to remove cat cr@p from some last cat owners pest?!?!?

Sadly Cleo your argument is as thin as the straw between your ears girl!!

I gave up reading comments due to boredom, bur perhaps the cat lovers can defend their free spirits, when I tell them that during the lovely hot weather recently I have been unable to have my windows open, because these Free spirits think it is OK to climb into my daughters bedroom window. One climbed into my bathroom window & wandered through my house. How can you defend a cat who sits under a tree waiting to kill baby birds learning to fly just for the hell of it. Free Spirits I would rather call the Urban Terrorists.

Cat Owners - Do NOT let your cats outdoors EVER. If you do then I suggest you put your trainers on be prepared to run as fast as you can armed with a poop-a-scoop.

Cat Haters - I expect if the above is adhered to then you might not burst anymore blood vessels getting so irate!!!!

This was his reply to one of my posts on the news item re family of cats dumped at the RSPCA. If you have not already done so, go and read his posting - it's worth the effort.
