Proud of town’s association with Cromwell

IN reply to the letter from Garry-John Hammond regarding Oliver Cromwell, Guardian, April 26.
Cromwell defeated Charles I, a monarch who believed in absolute power and the divine right of kings to wield such power. Many ‘monster’ monarchs have used such power over the centuries to massacre, torture and abuse both Catholics and Protestants alike.
Cromwell’s actions in Ireland were brutal and extreme but on balance he was someone sincere in his Christian beliefs and their application, a military genius and a ruler who held the country together through a very difficult period in its history.
The relationship between Parliament and the Crown was redefined in a more democratic way as the result of his rule. His consideration and nomination as one of the 10 ‘great’ Britons in the BBC series of that name speaks for itself.
I am very proud of the town’s association with Oliver Cromwell.
