Pressure by preachers does disservice to Christianity

I WISH to warn readers of the danger of Christian fundamentalists operating in the town centre.

On Friday, April 6, I was out enjoying a nice quiet drink with my girlfriend when she was subjected to aggressive preaching by a group of Christian fundamentalists in one of the bars.

I have no problem with Christianity. I myself go to church. But what I don’t like is when they try to pressure my girlfriend to go upstairs with them for prayer.

This was totally out of order and does a great disservice to Christianity.

I regard the practice as totally unacceptable as it puts unfair pressure on people, particularly the young and vulnerable.

They were operating in pairs approaching people in the nightclub and I found it extremely creepy and sinister.

me my son and the missus got cornered on sankey valley park about 2 month ago by a pair of mormons one from warrington one from america. they were very polite but a bit pushy about THEIR BELIEFS. they offered to come to our house help in the garden while we had just moved it i was like no thank you i'm good i can look after my own stuff thanks no i dont need a bible or your number. i am not religious at all i don't have a problem with people spreading their message infact i welcome it its always good to learn something. but when its almost like an aggressive sales technique it's too much. i believe faith no matter what religion it is, is somthing you should find yourself.

One simple way to make mormons, jehova's witnesses, or whoever, immediately run away, like the devil himself was standing behind them, requires just a simple sentence containing only 4 words - sorry, I'm a spiritualist.

Or tell them you are a blood donor (for Jehovahs witnesses) or drink tea/ coffee( for Mormons).

In what way were they fundamentalist? Do you mean they were evangelist - there is a world of difference.

They condemn alcohol as the devils agent, But they go into pubs begging for money or asking you to join them, If they want to spread the word advertise in the warrington guardian...

You know what, they should keep it to themselves, if i want to learn more about a faith I will find out myself not be cornered in a pub or a park or at my front door, i have no issue with people and their beliefs but when they try to force it on other people or try and influence the way laws are changed then i take issue.

i have one rule in life in regards to religion! If anyone believes in an unevidenced based, non provable, fictictious entity they believe is a power greater than them.....they are a nobber....end off!! I refuse to even engage with the deluded lot who believe in god, after all if you believe in the make believe you can neither be academic or have a real understanding of evidence base! Therefore your point automatically becomes rubbished!!!!

ps dont get me started on 'gods book'!! the lazy bugger didnt even write it himself!

Bit harsh chunkymunky. My husband is very well educated, degree from Oxford and a Phd.
He belives in god and goes to church.
If he wants to talk to his imaginary friends, that's his business. He doesn't try to force it down my throat though.

When it comes to fundamentalism (and evangelism for that matter) I've never met someone with faith who is as determined to foist their beliefs down other people's throats as many atheists are.

Come on Nick. It wasn't atheists flying planes into the twin towers. Atheists don't knock on my door. They don't tell me I'll be tortured if I don't agree with them. And they don't demand the chance to proselytise on television every week.

I'm all for religion and people's right to choose whatever route they like through life, but atheists don't do anywhere near as much evangelising as some religions.

Sorry Kreecher i just dont believe the two things can go together! Unless its a PHD is religion! Usually PHD research is based around evdience and fact, there is no evidence of a god and indeed no fact either. Its assumption of the 'word of god' that was written by a group of people over many years!

People from lots of backgrounds believe in God. I don't see why it's so hard to accept that someone with a Phd has faith. It's up to them what they believe.

are not in fact pushing your believes on Kreecher, the same way the religious people push their believes on others?

Why critisise somebody for being a Christian. This has nothing to do with their academic ability.

Please note I am Agnostic but still have respect for those who have a faith (as long as its not being rammed down my neck)

Iys called debate Maestro, you know the reason why people comment here? otherwise whats the point?!?

Gilmore, would you trsut a GP to treat you effectivly if he believe outside his surgery there was 12 pink elephants, you cant see them, nor can he prove there even there....no im sure you'd run a mile telling the world and his wife the man was a nutter! yes some how we believe those part of a mass delusion of belief that is clearly docuemented with huge holes in it and was clearly used for nothing more but early social policing prior to a properly constructed society.

PS how can you believe someone who argues something academically using fact and evidence who then askes you to trust in something using only blind faith? makes no sense to me what so ever! Our arguments are based on our beliefs we have through our understandings around afct, say what you will there is no fact of the evidence of a God, a higher being etc etc

ChunkyMunky - Why does there need to be facts and evidence to beleive in something?

Believing in something that the eyes cannot see doesnt mean people should be discredited.

Is a child crazy for beleiving in the Tooth Fairy or Father Christmas?

Dont shoot people down just because they dont share the same views as you!

chunkymunky says...

Because how come something be true if there is no evidence to support it?

"Is a child crazy for beleiving in the Tooth Fairy or Father Christmas?"..no of course not, then again a child who usualy believe in the above has not yet a full understanding of the world, its place in it etc hence why children once a certain age stop believing in them, becuase they can rationalise unlike smaller children who have imaginary friends, believe teddys come to life etc etc, in fact to try and use this as an argument is a complete moo point, the 2 are very much not the same thing!

Unless of course your suggest those who believe in God or a higher power do in fact have the same developed brain as an infant/small child?!?!?

"Believing in something that the eyes cannot see doesnt mean people should be discredited." tell me gilmore....would you choose a witch doctor who advised you ate 3 blades of grass and prey to the eagle god over a GP who prescribed you antibiotics to cure your illness?

The above decsiion will be made on rational understanding of what works based on fact, trials etc

Im not shooting down, just debating the point! thats the problem here, everyone takes everything so personal whilst stood on their own soap boxes!!

But remember people... Jesus loves you unconditionally, as long as you do exactly what the church says.

I am not a religious person at all and certainly don't appreciate having it imposed on me at all, to me its like anything else - if I want it or need it I will go out and get it. My question is why in a court of law we swear an oath to God (an unproven fact) but sometimes evidence such as "hearsay" or she said he said is not allowed as there is no supporting evidence - and if your not a Christian you can swear on the Koran or nothing at all if you choose - just saying

You can swear on the Qur'an if you are a Muslim, not if you are not a christian. If you have no religious belief, i.e. are an athiest, you can request to affirm to tell the truth, without holding any religious book.

Chunkymunky, Are you telling me you would refuse to see a reputable doctor/surgeon just because of their religious beliefs...

When you lose somebody close to you, reality says they are 6ft under. Yet the heart believes they walk by your side everyday. There is no evidence to support this and the person cannot be seen. Does this kind of belief make a person crazy.

You dont debate points, you critisise everybody who doesnt share your tunnel visioned views. Dont tar every person who has a belief with the same brush as religious nutcases!
