Let down by councillors

WITH reference to the article about travellers in the April 12 edition of the Warrington Guardian, I am a resident from the side of the said encampment, and am annoyed at what has been said about the happenings at Birchwood on the night the travellers arrived.

Yes, there were around eight to nine police cars but when I asked them to stop the travellers going on to the land, they would not, and could not, even though they had unbolted the gates from their hinge plates and cut the lock before lifting off the gates to gain access.

They also said that it would be policed for the rest of the night. It was not. By morning there were around 20 caravans on the site after a steady stream arrived during the course of the night.

We received a letter from the local MP filling us with false hope.

The way this has been dealt with is shocking.

They could have stopped this from happening at the time, but we were told by police that if they were to arrest any of them for breaking in, it would only annoy them.

That speaks volumes in my book.

We were told that we would be updated on the matter and we have not. The councillors have not been true to their word.

"The councillors have not been true to their words."

When have they ever?

On a national basis, Labour Councillors have always tended to go too softly softly with travellers- so it is only to be expected.
