Cab fare can’t be justified

I RETURNED from a visit to London this week where I had gone to my company’s head office. To get back to Euston station I took a taxi which cost me (not at a peak time) £8.20.

Back in Warrington I then took a taxi from Bank Quay station to my home in Grappenhall, which is a marginally shorter journey (again not at a peak time) and it cost me £5.60. It took all of seven minutes.

This seems crazy to me – I know which journey was the most difficult. The London cabbie had a hell of a job whereas from Bank Quay to my house is a breeze.

How can they justify that?

By you r own admission the Warrin gton journey was only slightly shorter but cost 30% less.

Perhaps you should ask why you were not charged more for your journey to Grappenhall.

Surely if u had to take a trip to your head office then you can claim your expenses back . . . So what are you moaning at?

The thing is you had a choice, bus would be cheaper, walking even cheaper, but for the luxury of a taxi only £5.60, doesn't sound bad to me. Hardly worth writing home about.

On/off peak makes no difference, especially in London as the traffic is always bad and the meter runs in a Hackney cab whilst stationary.

I used to work in London and often return to Warrington for family. On occassion I'd get a cab from the City to Euston. Even this 4 mile or so trip cost around £15. Therefore your office can't be too far from Euston.

Your fare to Grappenhall I assume was in a Hackney from Bank Quay, if so you pay convenience premium. At under £6 for 3 to 4 miles is reasonable in my view.

Out of interest, what would you deem a justifiable fare?

Seriously? I think cab fares in Warrington are reasonable, I'd go as far as saying cheap.

Another point about London Cabs - they are usually quite busy. In Warington, numbers of Hackneys have increased over the past twelve years, meaning many Taxis will work a ten-hour day and often get an average of only 10 -15 jobs a day. They can't pick and choose them, your fare might have been one of the best your driver got that day.
would you like to work 10-hour days for £50-£60 per day and pay for the running of a vehicle out of that.
I won't, which is why I sold up and got out of the business. I was sick and tired of people who earned £30, 40, 50K a year and spending a fortune on traveling to london, Scotland and countries around the world resenting paying a fare which left me with £350 for myself after expenses and an 80-hour week, sometimes being up and out at 4am to take someone to an airport, other times working a long weekend shift to take cabs-ful of resentful (and sometimes violent) drunks home for a few pounds after they have spent 50, 60, 70 pounds getting absolutely plastered and doped-up.
Stop moaning and show a little respect for cabbies!

i dont know wat i find more shocking with this post, the fact that your taking the time out of your day to log on here and complain about the price of cab fares or how cheap your cab fare in a hackney taxi was to grappenhall. i drive a private hire and you would pay at least that with us. all fares are faaaaarrrrr to low with the current and constant increase in fuel and insurance costs so bare that a thought next time your holding your hand out for your change as im guessing you didnt give the driver a tip. drive your car and park next time and burn your own fuel and pay the over priced parking premium and keep your thoughts to yourself you gimp.
