THE first week of July has been declared as National Democracy Week by the Government.
How ironic for a Government elected on just 43 per cent of the vote.
In response to this development, Make Votes Matter (MVM) is running street stalls across the UK this coming Saturday.
MVM and supporters like myself hope to send a clear message to the Government on the appalling state of British democracy.
We need to move towards a system in which every vote counts, and one which ensures that the representation a political party receives in Parliament is closely determined by that party’s share of the vote.
A move towards Proportional Representation (PR) is not about favouring one party over another.
I do believe there are reasons to suggest voters of all parties will benefit from a change to PR, and that very much includes Labour and Conservative voters.
On Saturday I will be setting up a street stall near the top end of Bridge Street at midday.
I look forward to engaging with the public on this most crucial issue.
