WHY not move the cenotaph across the road to a new permanent location in little used Marshalls Gardens (Warrington Guardian, April 19)?
Since the council closed off the access to the cenotaph when the new Mersey bridge was built the public have had difficulty in reaching it due to the heavy volume of traffic at Bridge Foot.
Marshall Gardens would be a lot safer and more accessible for members of the public to use.
The entrance could be made wider and more attractive, a separate entrance could be made via steps from the railway bridge and with the rest of the gardens sympathetically landscaped it would be a fitting place for people to visit to pay their respects to our fallen heroes.
Another possibly more favourable site would be in Queen’s Gardens which is nearer to the town centre and with better access for the public.
If it was re-assembled at the Springfield Street end it would still leave a lot of the existing Queen’s Gardens untouched for public use.
It is already home to the memorial statue of Colonel O’Leary which would fit in well with the cenotaph’s new position.
