I REFER to George Mckie’s letter (Warrington Guardian, April 5) regarding people running red traffic lights.

What you omitted to mention George is how many cyclists do you see doing the same?

The reason why people are running traffic lights is that there are too many sets of them in the town and the time phasing of them is ridiculous.

Just read James Wilson’s letter in the same edition of the Guardian about how it took him an hour to travel from Stockton Heath to central station – a distance of four miles.

I drive a lot in Thailand and there are three times the amount of cars as there are in the UK.

I have driven in Bangkok City. The traffic flows quicker.

And what is the reason why?

People wishing to turn left at a traffic light controlled junction can do so with caution when the green arrow flashes intermittently, advising them they can turn left therefore reducing traffic jams in the nearside lane.

In the outer lanes there are gantries above the road advising people in seconds how long they are going to have to wait before the lights change.

That applies to both green and red lights.

Perhaps this is an idea that Warrington Borough Council should adopt.

Just for the record George I once drove from Bangkok to Wha Hin for two hours, only passing through one set of traffic lights.
