YOU asked had anyone got any memories of Winwick Hospital (Warrington Guardian, March 20).

I am 83 now but going back around 70 years we lived at Longford, and as children we used to see wounded soldiers dressed in blue suits and white shirts and red ties when we walked to Winwick Delph to play.

We would go past White City and go into the hospital grounds.

We loved it.

The patients that were allowed out loved playing cricket with the lads, we got to know a lot of them by name.

On a Wednesday we were allowed into the ballroom to watch the pictures and when it was sports day we loved it.

Playing in Winwick Hospital grounds was the highlight of our lives, it didn’t cost a penny either, good job, we all came from big families so when you walked it from Longford you were never alone.

We all had brothers or sisters with us.

It was a fair walk but our mothers always knew that we were safe.
