WITH council tax bills arriving through our letter boxes, we are reminded that Warrington is one of the lowest-funded unitary authorities outside London.
In the light of this, it must be good news for us that the Government’s system of Rate Support Grant to local authorities is being phased-out.
In its place local authorities would, under the original proposals, be allowed to keep 100 per cent of the business rates raised locally (instead of the 50 per cent at present).
In view of Warrington’s relative economic prosperity, to which the Guardian referred in a recent editorial, one would certainly expect such measures, if implemented, to work to our advantage and hopefully relieve the burden on council tax payers.
