WITH reference to your article about the rubbish dumped after a group of travellers left a site in Longbarn (Warrington Guardian, March 1).

It’s a known fact that this is what travellers do, they have no regard for private property, environment, our culture, or the laws of the land.

To make matters worse the Government and councils the length and breath of the country are enablers.

We, the rate payers, end up paying the bill for cleaning up the mess and the fly tipping these groups leave behind.

In most cases we also have to pay to have them evicted from the land they have unlawfully moved onto.

And if they are on private land the landowner will have to pay large amounts of cash to get them off the land.

To my knowledge they are never prosecuted for such tactics because they are a law unto themselves.

The cost of dealing with these unlawful groups is reflected in our rates that have increased by approximately 5.9 per cent.

I don’t want to pay this additional cost and I’m sure the vast majority of rate payers would agree with me.

Furthermore I do not want to be an enabler.

Enough is enough and it’s time councils got tough with these unlawful groups of travellers.

We should start by impounding some of their luxurious vehicles that they have acquired to pay for the expensive costs of cleaning up their mess, fly tipping and evictions.

If the existing laws of the UK are inadequate to deal with travellers and their unlawful behaviour, then we should change them.

But if the laws are adequate then the councils should do what is right and use them.

We’ve put up with this situation for far too long.
