I WAS very interested to read your article on the Blackburne Arms in the Warrington Guardian (March 1).
I was articled in Warrington in the 1960s and went to the Blackburne Arms regularly when the landlord was Tom Farrington.
Tom used to serve very nice rolls with excellent fillings at lunchtime with our drinks.
One lunchtime, regrettably, a colleague of mine and I altered all his prices.
They used to be on some paper next to the roll and unsurprisingly Tom was furious the next day when many of his other customers complained to him that his prices had gone up dramatically with cheese rolls up from 1/9 pence to 2/6 pence overnight!
Tom tore a strip out of me in front of everybody, but I deserved it.
Anyway, it was known also as the ‘upper room’ where we could have our lunch. Happy memories.
