HAVING read your article ‘Pothole misery’ in the Warrington Guardian (January 25), I sent an email regarding the longstanding unsafe conditions of Birchdale Road in Appleton to councillors.

Together with other residents we are totally dissatisfied with the upkeep and sub standard of the general ongoing condition, with numerous unsafe and dangerous potholes that we have to negotiate on a daily basis.

Culminating in my vehicle being off the highway for three days last week due to a broken rear suspension spring, which had to be replaced at a cost exceeding £100.

However, I find the council spokesman’s version of the borough’s ‘rapid deterioration’ is a totally lame excuse and stock answer to the reality of the past and present road condition, and lack/ quality of maintenance work undertaken.

This is a health and safety issue, with the potential of injury or worse for those using this road in its dire condition on a daily basis.

With no footpath facilities along more than 70 per cent of the road’s length, it is imperative that the surface condition is maintained for the safety of all users.

Birchdale Road has not undergone total resurfacing work in the past 30 years.

It’s about time the council provides a duty of care regarding the maintenance and upkeep of this public road, in compliance with highway standards.
