WARRINGTON is slowly dying as a town centre.
A new market won’t help as markets everywhere are showing big declines due to high rents which means they can’t be as competitive as they used to be.
The growth of pound shops hasn’t helped either.
Widnes Market is getting more empty stalls and even the Wednesday flea market is feeling the pinch with regulars complaining that their takings are not even covering the rent.
Widnes is getting more popular with Warrington residents due to the abundance of free parking as well as Morrison’s, Marks and Spencer, Aldi, Asda, TJ Hughes, Tesco, etc all within walking distance.
If it had a Debenhams or Primark it would finally kill off Warrington as Marks and Spencer and TJs are sorely missed there, especially by the older shopper.
High rents are driving businesses away plus parking costs deter the shoppers so it is self defeating.
It’s happening in Chester too.
