READERS who are also regular users of social media will recognise David Braithwaite’s letter (Warrington Guardian, November 23) as a ‘cut and paste’ from posts circulating from the far right Britain First group.

As ever, it is a fact lite zone designed to appeal to and inflame nationalist anger.

It was, of course, such nationalism that led to the First World War and the deaths of millions of ordinary people.

Juncker may be a convenient target for quitters but take the trouble to research the EU structure and you will find that the real power resides with the heads of state of member nations.

Those states include France, Germany and Italy who lost 1.1, 2.0 and 0.65 million soldiers respectively.

Britain dragged in soldiers from all corners of the Empire including a million from India, Muslims and Hindus.

African soldiers also paid the ultimate price for us.

Is he suggesting that he is willing to pay reparations for the millions who died during Indian partition and the transatlantic slave trade, both a terrible blot on Britain’s history?

Winston Churchill called for a united states of Europe and the EU has largely been responsible for the stability that has ensured that while my father and grandfather fought in European wars, I have not, and enjoy the freedom and peace here that they were denied.
