IN response to the letter questioning the need for councillor allowances in the light of services being cut, such as the school crossing patrol.

I would say lollipop workers are not needed quite as much these days.

Most people drive their kids to school and the council have actually placed more of the concrete stop points in the middle of the road so people can cross safely without the need for lollipop people.

Many people don’t understand what a difficult job being a councillor is.

Many of them have full time jobs as well as being a councillor, so that is something that eats into their spare time and they are using it up to try and help.

Whether you like it or not they deserve some allowance.

People need to understand the bigger issue which is massive underfunding from this Tory government.

Another £20.8 million worth of cuts needs to be made to St Helens alone.

A few grand here and there for allowances would make little to no difference.

If it was not lollipop services being cut then it would be something else.

It is a lack of political education and anger that is causing everyone to blame the council.

Research the subject and you will realise most of what people are angry about is not their fault.

It is a sad time, the North West has been decaying since Thatcher’s era.

The imbalance of funding between the north and south is the main issue. Council tax barely touches the sides for a council’s budget.

I wish people would stop blaming the council and stop turning on each other.

More understanding and cooperation would be beneficial to the borough.

If people want to be able to understand more then I would recommend getting involved with local politics so you can someday have the chance to be a councillor yourself.

The more involved with politics the better.
