I READ with great interest, Tony Bowers’s letter (Warrington Guardian, September 7) about the proposal to build thousands of houses on our green belt in south Warrington.

It set me thinking as to who will benefit from such a development. I won’t and I doubt Tony Bowers will either.

What about you, what benefits will you accrue?

It is said, in business, that the only good deals are those when both sides benefit.

Just who is going to benefit here?

It seems to me that the only beneficiaries will be the building companies and that thought set me thinking too.

The councillors are elected by us, to represent us, not big business.

So that begs the question why don’t they represent us. I have yet to meet anybody who thinks this development is a good idea.

Just who are the councillors representing and more importantly, why?

This isn’t a question of Nimby, the green belts serve a great social service that is widely understood and is proven to contribute greatly to our quality of life, so why destroy them if they bring no benefits to us?

There are only two possible reasons for this to be given the go ahead. One is that the ego of politicians knows no bounds.

It is said that they want Warrington to become a city.

Have they bothered to ask the people who they represent if we all want that?

The other reason is there will be a lot of money to be made by this massive project and that money might just be spread a little further than you think.

I was thinking that the developers might offer to contribute either directly to council funds or help finance some other small projects for the council.

It’s food for thought though. Oh, and by the way, what’s our new MP for South Warrington doing?
