WITH reference to your article in the Warrington Guardian (July 20) about George Formby.
I was fortunate enough to have met George Formby’s mother Eliza around 1966 – this was through a neighbour of ours, Mrs Jessie Bailey.
Jessie and her husband Fred were great friends of the Formbys and well known in the town with their fruit stall in Warrington Market.
I remember seeing Jessie with this elderly lady and her saying to me ‘who do you think this is?’ She then introduced me to George’s mother Eliza who at that time would have been around 87.
When she told me who she was I couldn’t believe it.
She then told me how Eliza was now living on Wilderspool Causeway in an old terraced house which was even more of a surprise when you think of the lifestyle she must have had in years gone by at The Hillcrest on London Road.
And how she had helped George in those early years in showbusiness to having nothing.
