I WAS disappointed to read about the Ofsted rating for Mid Cheshire college and the subsequent merger with Warrington Collegiate (Warrington Guardian, July 6).
This situation a far cry from when I began my education career at Mid Cheshire in the 1960s.
In those days, focus was on apprenticeships and meeting the needs of industry.
Evening classes were also run to encourage career development while students continued in fulltime employment.
There were two first class mechanical and engineering laboratories as well as first class workshops for welding, fabrication, and motor vehicle work.
These facilities and courses gave students an insight into the conditions, expectations and the world of work.
The commercial aspects of the college at this time demonstrated a good understanding and relationship with industry, and many students were able to progress to higher levels commensurate with the industrial needs of the area.
I feel the current drive to re-focus on apprenticeships will revive colleges, improve British competitiveness and meet the needs of all students.
